March 30 – The Burial of Christ

Read: Matthew 27:57-66 and Isaiah 53:8-12

After the Lord gave his final breath and committed his spirit into his Father’s hands, the Romans, always the consummate professionals, ensured he was dead by driving a spear into his side. His death was confirmed by the Romans who executed him, by his disciples, who took his body and buried him, by the women who mourned him, and even by the Chief priests and Pharisees, who conspired against him, even in death. The foolishness of God is truly wiser than the wisdom of the wise, for the undoubtedly, unquestionably dead Jesus was precisely how the very power of death would be destroyed. The grave would not be able to contain him, for it had no right to a man of innocent blood. Mystery of mysteries, all his enemies ensuring his death meant final, glorious victory for the suffering servant.

Reflection:

Why is the message of the gospel such a stumbling block to the wise?

Consider how a tragedy like Jesus’ death is actually the basis of your hope in life.
