March 27 – Jesus before the Sanhedrin

Read: Matthew 26:57-68 & Daniel 7:9-14

Just like their forefathers before them, the leaders of Israel seek the life of the prophets that God sends to them. Even surrounded by enemies who mock him, and with the injustice of false witnesses being brought against him, Jesus makes no defence for himself. Only in order that the plan of salvation might move forward, the Lord declares that they will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven. Irony of ironies, the only time Jesus speaks is to ensure that his enemies get what they want, not in defence of himself. The injustice of this farcical trial reaches its highlight, as the innocent only speaks the truth, and is condemned for speaking it.

Reflection:

Why do you think the Jewish leaders were so intent on killing Jesus?

How does that anti-Jesus sentiment still rule the world and hearts today?
