March 24 – Palm Sunday

Read: Matthew 21:1-11 & Zechariah 9:9

Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem marks the beginning of the final days of his life. The last three years of ministry have all been leading to this week. The cries of hosanna to the Son of David give voice to the dreams and longings of the hopeful. Yet the one coming in the name of the Lord does not come with displays of power or glory, like a conquering Roman imperator. As waving palm branches welcome him into the city of David, the ancient prophecy of Zechariah finds its fulfilment: their king is here, humble and mounted on a donkey. His kingdom is not of this world, and the salvation he brings, eternal.

Reflection:

Why is the triumphal celebration of Jesus entering Jerusalem such a tragic scene?

How has even this tragic scene been redeemed in his death and resurrection?
