March 26 – The Garden of Gethsemane

Read: Matthew 26:36-46 & Matthew 4

The darkest hour fast approaches. The night is long and silence heavy. His disciples sleep peacefully, ignorant of the anguish that is upon them. Jesus is alone, deeper in the garden, alone with the knowledge of the suffering he is to drink from the cup prepared for him. In this hour, the true humanity of the Lord is on display. Truly he was like us in every way, yet without sin, that he might represent us perfectly in the heavens. So many before him have failed. So many have fallen short, but on this night, in this garden, the final Adam remains faithful, submitting to his Father’s will. As he stands resolute in his obedience to the Father, fast approaches the betrayer and a violent mob; the time for waiting is over, the hour is here.

Reflection:

How does the sheer humanity of Jesus help you to better trust him?

How does the scene of Jesus alone in the Garden move you?
